It's no spoiler to say that when Billy carries out the hit, things go south in spectacularly bad fashion, sending him on the lam. With an astronomical $2 million payout looming, Billy goes undercover to assassinate a criminal, but the cover his employers dream up hits a nerve: while masquerading as a novelist renting space in an office building, avid reader Billy sets to the task of writing his own lightly fictionalized autobiography, unspooling the wounds of a traumatic childhood and a bruising tour of duty in the Iraq War. King’s latest endeavor begins with a familiar premise: ex-Marine sniper Billy Summers, a principled hit man on the eve of retirement, agrees to do one last job.

Leonardo spent many pages in his notebook dissecting the human face to figure out every muscle and nerve that touched the lips. The Mona Lisa’s smile is the culmination of a lifetime spent studying art, science, optics, and every other possible field that he could apply his curiosity to, including understanding the universe and how we fit into it. Where does the “ Mona Lisa ” fit into Leonardo’s life and work-and how has she managed to bewitch us for 500 years? We have to start with the most famous smile in the world. ![]() When National Geographic caught up with Isaacson by phone at his home in Washington, D.C., he explained why Mona Lisa’s smile is the culmination of a lifetime of inquiry how Michelangelo and Leonardo couldn’t stand each other and why being curious was Leonardo’s defining trait. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Again, like the majority of his work, this is essentially a story of a quest. Most all of Delany's characters and societies are bizarre and alien, even when they are on Earth, and Babel-17 is no exception. He is generally associated with the New Wave, but there are a multitude of styles and themes here that not only transcend New Wave, they also hark back to old-style space opera as well as seem to be a forerunner of cyberpunk. Amazon gives the impression that the Kindle file of Babel-17 includes "Empire Star," but that is incorrect.ĭelany won his first Nebula for this novel, and it was also nominated for a Hugo. Babel-17 is available as a separate title for Kindle, and I would assume for the Nook and other e-readers too. The novella "Empire Star" has appeared in paperback by itself or with other unrelated stories, as well as story collections and anthologies, but all of those are out of print at this time, although I'm sure you can find some of those others if you search enough. The images on this page are from the individual paperbacks I have, not the current edition. I'm reviewing these two together because the current print edition of Babel-17 includes both, per Delany's wishes since they are connected. ![]() |
